WHAT TO BRING
Have we mentioned that the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable? While out on your hiking or fishing adventure, we recommend that you bring multiple layers to accommodate the ever-changing conditions. In July and August, you can expect average temperatures around 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit, but temperature fluctuations can vary from 40-75 degrees Fahrenheit. If you plan to travel in June or September we strongly suggest bringing heavier layers as the temperatures can reach as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill factor.
To ensure that every guest has space for their personal belongings on the trip from Anchorage to the lodge, we have a baggage weight allowance of 50 lbs. per person. To allow for space requirements in the float planes, it is helpful if your gear fits into two small, soft-sided bags and a rod case. Storage is available at the departure hangar in Anchorage for luggage that you do not want to bring to the lodge.
High quality rain gear, an insulated jacket, hats, gloves, warm sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, thick socks, comfortable waterproof shoes, and fleece or merino wool base layers to wear under your waders or rain pants are highly recommended. A waterproof ‘dry bag’ comes in handy to store extra layers, camera equipment, and other items that youwant to stay dry. We do provide extra waterproof packs available for use during your stay if you cannot bring your own.
FISHING SPECIFICALLY: We provide our fly fishing guests with rods, reels, fly lines, and flies. We also provide all the terminal tackle (leader, tippet, split shot, etc) needed during your stay. We suggest anglers bring line clippers, needle-nosed pliers, insect repellent, sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses. If you would like to bring your own gear, we typically use 5-7wt single-hand rods (depending on the river) with floating lines on a reel with a reliable drag system.
Fly selection generally depends on timing and river, and our guides will have everything you will need for a successful day of fishing, but feel free to bring your own! A well-stocked fly box generally consists of a selection of streamers (sculpins, leeches, fry, and other baitfish patterns), traditional dry flies (elk hair caiddis, adams, etc.), mouse flies, flesh flies, and salmon egg imitations (i.e. trout beads) in various sizes and colors.
If you have your own waders and boots, we suggest you bring them to ensure that you have a proper fit and are comfortable to hike/fish in. Please note that felt soled boots are no longer allowed in Alaska, and boots with metal cleats are also not allowed on the floats of our airplanes. We do provide a slip-on version of cleats that can be taken off and put on when you reach the river to assist with wading.
What Not to Bring
Please do not bring sleeping bags, towels, landing nets, gaffs, creels, or any type of firearm. Do not bring bear spray.
